Not because it is shrinking, but because of how far we can reach. With a single click, we can connect with someone thousands of kilometers away. With that same click, we can also lose hours of attention, and even our ability to think critically. We live in an age where ideas travel faster than people. In the world where opportunities appear and disappear in seconds. But in the global conversation, there is one question that decides who gets heard and who gets ignored: What language do you speak? English is not just a school subject. It is the language of science, technology, and even the internet itself. It is the bridge between cultures, the common ground in international rooms, and often the difference between participating in the world, or simply observing it

Globalization acts as a double-edged sword. It can be harmful, or it can become an opportunity. It can open a gate to entirely new possibilities, or it can turn into a powerful current that disrupts and scatters our identity. But like any current, if we understand it and build the right boat, we can use its force to our advantage, to sail the world and engage with it as Indonesians, not as strangers to ourselves. The question is no longer whether language matters anymore, however the real question is which language allows us to enter to the global conversation. Today, that language is English. English is widely used when knowledge is shared, when technology is developed, and when nations start collaborating to one another. It is the language where opportunities are discussed and decisions are made. When we understand English, we are able to speak for ourselves on the global stage. When we do not engage to any conversation, our voices are easily overlooked.

I started learning English when I was 9 years old. At that time, I learned simply only for fun, mostly because my mom told me to do so. I never thought much about it. English was just another subject, another activity after school. Until last year, I realized something important. English did not just help me communicate. It quietly shaped to be whoever I am. Many of my ideas come from the content I watch. Some English books also changed and inspired me. Over times, this language influenced the way I see the world and how I express myself. English helped me accessing knowledge that was once separated by language barriers. It connected me to people I have never met, from countries I have never visited, yet their ideas still reached me.

That experience changed my perspective. I realized that English is not just a skill. It is a bridge we can step onto. Speaking, sharing ideas, and learning are only the first steps onto that bridge. What language truly does is change how opportunities come to us. It brings the world closer, and sometimes, it brings us closer to ourselves.

In conclusion, globalization is not something that will happen someday. It is happening right now, and it is affecting us in real time. The world does not wait. It keeps moving, whether we are prepared or not. Choosing to stay silent and disconnected is choosing to be left behind. What matters is this moment and the decisions we make today. As what stated by Johann Wolfgang, “Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own.” English allows us to understand the world beyond our borders and, in the process, understand ourselves more clearly. The world is already moving forward, and it will not slow down for anyone. So, the question is, will you speak and move with the world, or will you let it move passing over you? Thank you for your attention and have a great day.

Have you imagined how massive the world we live in it is so big it can holds eight billion souls, yet it feels smaller every time we look into it.
